What are lab tests?

The Southern New Hampshire Internal Medicine team uses lab tests to screen for diseases, assess general health, and diagnose conditions. 

The private physician-owned practice proudly offers on-site diagnostic lab tests. That means there’s no need for you to go to another facility to have blood drawn. Your provider also gets the results from your lab tests faster. 

What are the types of lab tests?

Southern New Hampshire Internal Medicine offers many types of blood tests to assess health, screen for diseases, and diagnose health problems. 

The lab tests may include:

Complete blood count (CBC)

A CBC is a blood test that evaluates the cells in your blood, including your red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The team may request a CBC to look for signs of anemia or infection. 

Prothrombin time (PT)

If you’re taking Coumadin®, a type of blood thinner, the team may have you regularly come in so they can check your PT. 

This test measures how quickly it takes for your blood to clot, which helps the team monitor the effectiveness of Coumadin so they can adjust your dose as needed. 

Basic metabolic panel (BMP)

A BMP measures your blood levels of glucose, sodium, potassium, chloride, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, and carbon dioxide. 

The team may order this lab test to screen for health conditions or monitor the effectiveness of chronic disease treatment. 

Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP)

The CMP is a more comprehensive blood test that assesses health and organ function. 

Lipid panel

The lipid panel checks your blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The team orders this test for cholesterol screenings and to monitor the effectiveness of your cholesterol management program. 

Hemoglobin A1C

The hemoglobin A1C measures your blood glucose levels over a three-month period. The health experts order this lab test to diagnose diabetes or assess the effectiveness of a diabetes management plan. 

When do I need lab tests?

Your provider at Southern New Hampshire Internal Medicine determines when you need lab tests. 

Lab tests provide valuable data about your health. Your provider may order them during your annual physical exam to screen for health conditions or during an urgent care visit to diagnose a health problem. 

You may also need lab tests if you have a chronic health condition that requires ongoing medical care and management.
